Germinated Seeds Arrived Rotten? Understanding Seed Viability and Transit Risks

Germinated Seeds Are Proof of Viability

Germinated seeds actually provide the strongest proof that the seeds were viable before shipment. After all, dead seeds do not suddenly wake up, germinate, and then decide to perform theater during delivery.

However, germinated seeds are also living plant material. Therefore, they require proper handling before, during, and after transportation. Once the package leaves the nursery, many factors move beyond the seller’s control. For example, we cannot control how couriers stack the box, how airport cargo staff handle the parcel, how hot the customs warehouse becomes, or how long the package stays inside a delivery vehicle under direct sunlight.

Why Rot Can Still Happen

In many cases, customers open the package for inspection and later repack the seeds differently from the original setup. Unfortunately, even small changes in airflow, moisture balance, or seed position can quickly trigger rot, especially in tropical recalcitrant seeds.

Furthermore, fresh seeds continue to respire and react to environmental changes throughout transit. High humidity, poor ventilation, excessive heat, or pressure damage can easily affect their condition. In other words, live seeds need stable conditions from the nursery all the way to the final destination.

Germination Already Proves the Seeds Were Alive

Calling a seller a “scammer” because germinated seeds later rot during transit is similar to blaming a bakery because fresh bread becomes moldy after someone stores it incorrectly for several days. In reality, germination itself already proves the seeds were alive and active before shipment.

Globally, all fresh seeds and live plant materials carry transit risks. Consequently, experienced collectors understand that successful importation depends not only on the seller, but also on handling conditions throughout the entire journey — including after the package arrives.

Tropical Seeds Need Proper Handling

Healthy germination clearly proves the seeds were alive before shipment. Nevertheless, tropical seeds remain sensitive throughout the shipping process, and successful delivery depends on proper handling at every stage — not only at the nursery, but also during customs inspection, delivery, unpacking, and storage afterward.

We always ship viable material with care. However, nature still follows biology, not customer expectations.

Every Collector Starts With Experience

For many collectors, successful seed importation also comes through experience. Therefore, if your first attempt does not succeed, you can always try again with species that germinate more easily and tolerate shipping better. Our collection includes many beginner-friendly tropical species suitable for first-time growers and importers.
